Program of August 9, 2001 Case 1 On her birthday, woman kills lover with a shot to the chest. The crime occurred on December 15, 2000, in Caxias, Maranhão. The accused and the victim – thirty-five years older than her – had a romance marked by many fights for three years. Most of the time, the fights happened because the lover took money from the victim to have fun with younger men. On the day of the crime, the accused was turning 26 and, while the victim was spending the morning with one of his daughters, she went to his farm and ordered an employee to kill a piglet to celebrate her birthday. When the victim arrived at the farm, the lover was drunk and ready to fight. According to the indictment, she grabbed a pistol that the victim kept in a piece of furniture and threw it. While trying to disarm her, the victim was fatally shot. Case 2 In Piracicaba, São Paulo, a 17-year-old girl leaves home at night to go to school and never returns. Her body is found the following morning – April 4, 1990 – in a deserted location. To the surprise of family and friends, the suspect is the brother of the victim's best friend, belonging to a traditional family in the city. He comes forward and says that the two were snorting cocaine and the young woman died of an overdose. But the forensic examination proves that she was beaten, forced to have anal sex, and strangled. He remains free until his trial in September 1999, but fails to appear and becomes a fugitive from justice.
