How St Cuthberts Paper Mill make Watercolour Paper (On Location)
Situated on the banks of the River Axe in the southwest of England, St Cuthberts have one of only a few cylinder mould machines in the world that is dedicated to making watercolour paper. St Cuthberts Mill has been making paper since the 1700s. Specialising in artist papers, they make three of the most popular watercolour papers used by artists today; Bockingford, Saunders Waterford and Millford, as well as Botanical Ultra Smooth paper and Somerset printmaking paper. As part of our On Location series, we visited St Cuthberts paper mill to find out how watercolour paper is made, how they test every batch by hand, and their commitment to protecting the environment. 0:00 Introduction 0:14 On Location St Cuthberts Mill 0:17 Preparing the Pulp with water from the River Axe 0:23 The production begins with the paper pulp mixed with water 0:35 Once the pulp mixed with water, it is held in a tank, which feeds the Cylinder Mould paper machine 1:02 The paper pulp is picked up from the vat by a slowly rotating cylinder mould.
