Alberto Caamaño: "Mi padre no fue comunista, fue un hombre de su tiempo"
Alberto Caamaño, son of former president Francisco Alberto Caamaño, said that his father read two books on communist topics, written by emblematic figures such as Che Guevara, who died in Bolivia, and Võ Nguyên Giáp, a historic Vietnamese general and communist leader, a key figure in Vietnam's independence. He explained that his father was not a communist leader and only knew the leaders of the Dominican left during the April 1965 war, including Rafa Taveras, Fidelio Despradel, Amaury Germán Aristy, and others. He explained that his father trained at local and U.S. military academies, but his role as a guerrilla fighter must be understood within the historical context in which he lived. He stated that there are not two Francisco Alberto Caamaños—one from the War of Independence and the other from the guerrilla movement—but rather one man in two distinct historical periods. He expressed his hope that the Ministry of Defense would eliminate the characterization of Caamaño as a deserter, a decision made on the orders of Enrique Pérez y Pérez in 1967. He maintained that Caamaño was visited in Cuba by his father, Fausto Caamaño, to convince him to abandon the guerrilla movement, and that what ultimately prompted Caamaño's decision to end his training in Cuba and return to the country as a guerrilla fighter was the death of Amaury Germán Aristy and Los Palmeros on January 12, 1972. He asserted that there were internal political differences, that there had been infiltration, and that his father and Amaury had disagreements, but that upon witnessing the deaths of Amaury and his comrades, he questioned how it was possible that his father had doubts about those young men and remained in Cuba doing nothing. He stated that he is convinced his father, who served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and National Police, was executed by his fellow soldiers on the orders of Joaquín Balaguer, then President of the Republic. Alberto Caamaño congratulated and thanked President Luis Abinader for reviving the initiative to build the museum commemorating the April uprising. He said there is a wealth of documentation and important artifacts that will be made public and will be part of the museum. Alberto Caamaño was interviewed by journalist Fausto Rosario Adames on the program "¿Y tú…qué dices?" (And you…what do you say?), which airs daily on AcentoTV.
