The Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, announced today that the Spanish Government will mobilize €8 billion by 2030 for the development of the National Deep Tech Strategy, a national plan aimed at transforming scientific potential into technological leadership in Spain. Minister Morant emphasized that this strategy, led by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, along with the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration and eleven other ministries, “will position Spain at the forefront not only in research, but also in the development, manufacturing, and application of cutting-edge technology.” “We have the talent, the research capacity, and the companies necessary to lead this new technological revolution. With this strategy, we are giving the definitive boost to turn ideas into prosperity,” the Minister stated. The Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, María González Veracruz, stated that “we are not just talking about technology; we are talking about social change, economic change, well-being, health, employment, and sustainability. Therefore, deep tech needs decisive public support and a democratic approach. We cannot leave it in the hands of large corporations.” She also emphasized that “the Spanish Government is clear on this: science and technology must be at the service of the common good, with ethical and responsible development that respects human rights and puts people at the center, with criteria of cohesion and equity, leaving no one behind. And that is the powerful voice that Spain leads in Europe and the world.” Key Pillars of the Deep Tech Strategy The Strategy will be structured around three main pillars: Strengthening scientific and technological capabilities. Strengthening the business fabric from research to the market. Building a coordinated ecosystem among public administrations, research centers, and companies. It will focus on strategic areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, biotechnology, advanced robotics, new materials, semiconductors, and clean energy. These technologies require long periods of research and significant investment before reaching the market, a phase known as the "valley of death," where many innovative projects fail to gain traction. Morant cited the WISER project as an example, in the field of nuclear fusion—the same energy that powers stars in the cosmos, applied here on Earth. This project, with an investment of 500 million euros, is the result of a partnership between the Center for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research (CIEMAT), the Center for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI), and the company Técnicas Reunidas. “Make Science Spain’s Future” More than 70% of the planned funds will be allocated directly to the productive sector to support the scaling up of projects, their industrialization, and their entry into international markets. “We want what is discovered in Spain to also be manufactured in Spain and generate jobs in Spain. We want science, which is already changing the world, to be a cutting-edge industry at the service of our society. We are underway. And we are not going to stop. Make Science Spain’s Future,” the minister stated.
