I stayed at Matsuzakaya Honten, Ashinoyu Onsen, Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. Hakone Ashinoyu Onsen has been loved by people since the Nara period. Located near the highest point of National Route 1 near Lake Ashi, the hot springs are known as one of Hakone's most famous hot springs. I have stayed at inns in Hakone several times, but at the time I had little knowledge about hot springs, and although there were historical inns, I did not know that Hakone had such wonderful hot springs. I checked in at a lobby that exuded history. The lobby, which was used as a dance hall at the time, is a beautiful space with a red carpet and classical chairs, creating an atmosphere of Taisho romanticism. The hotel is made up of six buildings, and this time I stayed at Kakumeikan. The rooms in the buildings built in the Meiji period have been renovated to retain the charm of the time, making them comfortable rooms. There are large windows overlooking the 13,000m2 site and fences and furnishings that evoke the time. I was able to spend a comfortable time in a two-room room with a large king bed. The hot springs consist of two large baths, one for men and one for women, Gongen-no-yu, and five private baths. All of these hot springs are sourced. Although the inn has only 20 rooms, many of the rooms have their own hot springs, and the abundant source, which is said to produce more than 200 liters per minute, supports this environment. The large bath has been beautifully renovated with a tasteful design that evokes history, and the private hot springs are free to use no matter how many times you use them. The spring quality includes the three major spring qualities: sulfur-containing calcium, sodium, and magnesium sulfate and bicarbonate springs. There is a faint deposit of Kii mud hot spring flowers at the bottom of the bathtub, and when you gently step in, you can enjoy the exquisite hot springs with hot spring flowers fluttering around. It's nice to be able to enjoy the wonderful hot springs to your heart's content at my favorite historical inn. There are many rooms with hot springs and private baths, so I get the impression that not many people use the large baths. I was able to enjoy the large bathtub alone. The superb hot springs create a luxurious feeling, and the inn has the best environment for enjoying a bath. Matsuzakaya Honten, which has restarted as a high-class inn, also serves excellent food, and I will never forget the kaiseki cuisine that uses locally produced ingredients. I was also happy with the rice balls I had for dinner after the meal. It was a wonderful stay that made me realize the greatness of Hakone's hot springs.
