We Hiked the HARDEST Trail on Vancouver Island — 5040 Peak

We took on 5040 Peak — widely considered the best hike on Vancouver Island — and the views did not disappoint. This trail via the Cobalt Lake Trail is relentlessly steep from the start, with rooty switchbacks, exposed rock scrambles, and a few sections where you're pulling yourself up with your hands. But every grunt and groan is worth it. At the top, you get a full 360° panorama — Triple Peak, Cats Ears, the Broken Group Islands in Barkley Sound, and on a clear day, the Coastal Range on the mainland. Along the way we passed the serene shores of Cobalt Lake, home to the ACC Alpine Hut — a hidden gem for anyone wanting to overnight in the alpine. The lake itself is stunning, with mirror-calm water framed by rugged peaks. 📍 Located between Port Alberni and Tofino, off Marion Creek Forest Service Road (4x4 recommended but not required with good clearance) Show some love to my social: Social Media (Follow Me) Instagram -   / royranaonth.  .
