The approximately 2,000 artifacts discovered at the Okjeon Ancient Tombs in Hapcheon, Gyeongnam Province, serve as groundbreaking evidence that fills in the gaps in Gaya history. In particular, the four ring-handled swords featuring dragon and phoenix motifs unearthed from a single tomb symbolize the existence of a powerful royal authority equipped with unique manufacturing techniques. This kingdom is presumed to have been established around 400 AD by advanced forces from the Gimhae region who migrated to escape the southward advance of the Goguryeo army and settled in the Hwanggang River basin. It possessed a prosperous economy based on jade processing and iron production, and the large quantity of horse helmets—rare in East Asia—demonstrates the existence of a powerful cavalry force.
