Carboniferous Climate & the Ice Age & Giant Insects that Resulted | GEO GIRL

During the Middle Paleozoic Era, the supercontinent Pangea formed, glaciers expanded leading to the largest ice age of the Phanerozoic Eon (the last ~600 million years), sea level fell, and insects became giant! The cause of of this ice age was likely due to increased continental weathering, leading to C burial and global cooling. Evidence for this ice age is found in the rock record as glacial deposits across the continents that were connected as Pangea at the time, and as isotope signatures within certain deposits that indicate the extent of global cooling at this time. The ice age caused Mass Extinctions among all major marine animals, which made the later Permian Extinction even more devastating. The increase in C burial that caused the ice age also caused gigantic insects to evolve due to higher oxygen content in the atmosphere. After the ice age, global warming set in which eventually led to the greatest extinction of all time at the end of the Permian period, which marks the end of the Paleozoic Era and the beginning of the Mesozoic Era, bringing in the Age of Dinosaurs.
