In the first trial sentencing held about seven months after his indictment, the court sentenced Mayor Oh to a fine of 10 million won. The court found Mr. Myung guilty in five out of the ten public opinion polls he conducted, where call and messenger records matched the circumstances of the payment. For the remaining five cases, the court determined that the fact of Mayor Oh's side commissioning the polls or any connection to payment on his behalf was not sufficiently proven. The court further pointed out that Mayor Oh had secretly concealed the payment process, noting that the nature of the offense was egregious. The Special Prosecutor welcomed the verdict, stating that the judgment finding all defendants guilty was based on evidence and legal principles. Conversely, Mayor Oh's side expressed their intention to appeal immediately, stating that they found the ruling difficult to accept. As current law stipulates that a Seoul mayoral election is invalidated if a fine of 1 million won or more is finalized for violating the Political Funds Act, a fierce legal battle between Mayor Oh's side and the special prosecutor is expected to continue in the appeal trial.
