«Отношение к своим в России не поменялось»: почему останки 2000 солдат застряли на складе в Латвии?

For over a quarter of a century, the "Legenda" unit has been searching for and reburying soldiers who died in Latvia during World War II. Most often, searchers find Soviet soldiers—tens of thousands of them remain on Latvian soil. Search and identification are complicated by the fact that the Soviet leadership did not issue dog tags to Red Army soldiers, and paper documents quickly deteriorated in the ground. In the 1990s and 2000s, "Legenda" actively collaborated with the Russian embassy and Russian search teams, but in 2014, relations with official Russia began to deteriorate. Since 2022, they have been virtually gone. Meanwhile, the remains of more than 2,000 Red Army soldiers await reburial in a warehouse near Riga. How has Russia abandoned its own once again? And why do Latvians continue to search for Soviet soldiers despite the lack of funding and support? Novaya Gazeta Evropa spoke with the founders of the "Legenda" detachment, Talis Eshmits and Viktors Duks.
