Shenyang, China: The Cradle of the Qing

Though little-known in the west, Shenyang is a city that shaped Chinese history on multiple occasions. In this vlog episode, we take a look at Shenyang's history as the birthplace of China's final dynasty—the Qing Dynasty. We begin at Beiling Park (北陵公園), the burial site of Huang Taiji, the founding Qing emperor who transformed Jurchen tribes into a dynasty that would rule China for nearly three centuries. From there, we explore the Shenyang Imperial Palace (瀋陽故宮), also known as the Mukden Palace, and trace how Nurhaci and Huang Taiji ran a nascent government that would eventually conquer the entire country. Along the way, I share some personal family connections to Shenyang, showing why this city has always held a special place in my life.
