They Destroyed Everything.

I came home to a situation I never expected. In this video, free-range cattle start destroying the straw bales I had delivered for my DIY straw bale house. These bales are meant to become the walls of the off-grid, 1,200 sqft home that I'll be building in 2026. What follows is a scramble to problem-solve in real time. My neighbors and I rush to get a barbed wire fence up, only to wake up the next morning and realize the cows got through it anyway. It turns into a full blown off-grid mess. While trying to figure out next steps, I keep working on the land, doing daily chores, and juggling the reality of building something from scratch when things don’t go according to plan. Eventually, a plan of action starts to form, including the opportunity to order more straw bales once the cattle move on. This is the unfiltered side of off-grid building, DIY construction, and rural life. Not everything is aesthetic. Not everything goes smoothly. Sometimes it’s just problem-solving, adapting, and keeping momentum when things feel like a total shit show.
