CH-124 Sea King; Legendary ASW helicopter and example of a deeply flawed defense procurement process

Support me on Patreon - / polyusstudios Serving Canada for 55 years, the CH-124 Sea King was a rugged, versatile anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter. Adopted in 1963 to counter advanced Soviet submarines, this heavy, dual-role "hunter-killer" famously pioneered the "Beartrap" haul-down system, allowing it to safely land on small destroyers in rough seas. Over decades, the Sea King adapted to search and rescue, cargo transport, and disaster relief. However, its legacy was heavily tarnished by a highly politicized, 40-year procurement "dumpster fire." Following multiple cancellations and decades of costly maintenance delays, the iconic workhorse was finally replaced by the CH-148 Cyclone in 2018.
