Anselm Kiefer Exodus at GAGOSIAN
James Kalm has come to realize that for him, there is only so much time left. So, after grinding away in his own studio all day, when it came to browsing an Anselm Kiefer show, he showed up late and kept videoing until he ran out the clock, twice. Anselm Kiefer is perhaps the most recognized painter in the world today. Your correspondent has been watching his work progress since the early 1980s, and has been covering it on YouTube for over a decade. Using a myriad of legends, myths, philosophical and religious quotations as source material, Kieffer also employs a plethora of materials like oil paint, acrylic, shellack, chalk, resin, plaster, gold leaf and lead to create his monumental pictures. The result is a theatrical depiction of current affairs, tragic historical references, mingled with German Romanticism, and augmented with alchemical metaphors and means. This program was recorded December 9 and 10, 2022. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk
