Temperatures have soared amid a heatwave, and yesterday marked the hottest June 21st in Spain since records began. The situation is particularly harsh in the north of the country, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius in cities like Zaragoza and Bilbao. Furthermore, the so-called "torrid nights," a term describing nights when the temperature doesn't drop below 25 degrees Celsius, are making it difficult to sleep. In Almería, for example, temperatures have remained above 30 degrees Celsius for two consecutive days. Yesterday saw temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius at 75 weather stations operated by AEMET (the Spanish State Meteorological Agency), and today the map is awash in fuchsia, with a red alert in the interior of the Basque Country, where temperatures are expected to exceed 42 degrees Celsius. Experts attribute the extreme temperatures in the north to southerly winds. The problem, however, extends beyond this specific heatwave. Data shows that heat waves have become increasingly frequent since 1975, and AEMET (the Spanish State Meteorological Agency) warns that a new record temperature for June could be set tomorrow, the highest since 1950. These phenomena are not only occurring earlier in the year but are also intensifying, forcing the population to adapt.
