The Future of Football: Best New Stadium

What are the best new football stadia that are being planned and developed? This is the future of football stadiums! Tottenham Hotspur’s new ground has set a high bar on both aesthetics and functionality, so we thought we’d see which other clubs have plans in progress to try and push things even further... In 2019 AC Milan and Inter confirmed that their iconic San Siro stadium, one of the most recognisable images in world football, would be demolished and replaced by an entirely new stadium costing £690 million pounds. The clubs released a joint statement planning 'a new modern stadium, of approx. 60.000 seats. In La Liga, work is set to start in May 2020, and last until 2023 on Barcelona’s Camp Nou. Another iconic landmark in the world of football will be given a facelift, increasing the capacity by 5000 to 105,000, adding a roof around the whole stadium and incorporating modern technology like 5G.  Not to be outdone by their Catalan rivals, Real Madrid revealed plans in June 2019 for a spectacular redevelopment of the Bernabeu. Florentino Perez said “We want this to be the great digital stadium of the future, an arena to make Madrid competitive in the ever-more uncertain scenario in football.” Work is expected to take four years to complete and developments will include a retractable roof and perhaps most eye catchingly, a 360 degree panoramic screen encircling the entire inside of the stadium. AC Milan and Inter aren’t the only Serie A clubs looking to either replace or modernise their existing stadiums. Atalanta, Bologna, Fiorentina and Roma all have plans in place for the coming years.  Atalanta’s project, due for completion in 2021 illustrates some of the unique issues that exist for clubs developing their stadiums in Italy. Two of the current stands in the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia, the longest stands running by the touchline are listed monuments, due to their decorative facades. A similar problem exists for Bologna, who are in the midst of a five year development of their Stadio Renato Dall’Ara. The final renovated stadium is due to have a glass roof, revealing part of the original stadium and in the words of chairman Joey Saputo will be “a successful mix of ancient and modern”   Fiorentina have been planning development for years, but with billionaire Rocco Commisso now owning the club they have the motivation and resources to make this a reality. Currently there are three options up for debate, build a new stadium in Mercafir, a site to the north west of the city centre, build a new stadium adjacent to the Artemio Franchi, or to redevelop the existing stadium on the same site. Whichever option the club go for, with a billionaire behind the scenes expect this to move fast. Roma have perhaps the most fully formed new stadium plans in Serie A, but have been held up by planning issues. Their “Stadio Della Roma” project would see a 52,000 seater stadium built, but given that this was first discussed in public in 2014, it’s taking some time to get over the line. Everton are well down the planning road for their beautiful looking new waterside stadium, the proposal to build at Bramley Moore Dock, 2 miles away from Goodison Park is going to have a formal planning application submitted by the end of the year. Let us know what you think of this plan in the comments Everton fans, to us at Squawka it looks like a potentially brilliant stadium. Crystal Palace want to expand Selhurst park from it’s current 28,000 capacity to 34,000.  The extra capacity would come via a new main stand, with building scheduled to take place in the summer of 2021 according to a report by Evening Standard, after, you guessed it, planning related delays. Another notable development in the Premier League is potentially at Anfield. In July 2019 CEO Peter Moore cryptically said on rumoured plans; “I think in the next few months you’re going to hear from us as regards to what those plans will be.” I can tell you definitively, it won’t be the rather small-to-medium plans we had recently.” So watch this space Liverpool fans!
