For decades, twenty percent of the sky was simply blank. Not empty — hidden. The dense disk of the Milky Way blocked our view of everything behind it, and astronomers had no way to see through. They called it the Zone of Avoidance. In 2016, radio telescopes detected something enormous lurking in that forbidden region. They named it the Vela Supercluster. But for ten years, its true scale remained unknown. In 2026, a team of astronomers using the MeerKAT radio telescope array in South Africa combined over sixty-five thousand galaxy distance measurements with thousands of new radio observations from deep inside the Zone of Avoidance. What they mapped changed the picture of our cosmic neighborhood permanently. The Vela Supercluster is approximately three hundred million light-years across — roughly three thousand times wider than the Milky Way. It contains at least twenty galaxy clusters. Its total mass is equivalent to thirty million billion times the mass of our Sun. It has a double-core structure at its heart. And it has been silently pulling our galaxy through space for billions of years, without us knowing it was there.
