The White Palace is a three-story building, 19m high, 25m long, and 27m above sea level. In French, the White Palace is also known as Villa Blanche. Built from 1898 to 1902, it served as a summer retreat for the Governor-General of Indochina, Paul Doumer. Emperor Minh Mang once built Phuoc Thang Fortress here to control the Can Gio estuary. After gaining control of Indochina, the French colonial government razed the fortress to build a villa to serve as a summer retreat for the Governors-General of Indochina. The project was approved by Governor-General Paul Doumer, who named the villa Villa Blanche, after his daughter, Blanche Richel Doumer. Construction began in 1898 and was completed in 1902. Due to its white exterior paint and the name Villa Blanche, the Vietnamese commonly refer to it as the White Villa (Bạch Dinh). Paul Doumer did not have the opportunity to use the villa before returning to France. His successor, Jean Baptiste Paul Beau, was likely the first to use it. However, in September 1907, the villa became the place where King Thành Thái was held under house arrest for 10 years. The people of Vũng Tàu greatly respected him, and therefore also called the White Villa the "Lord's Villa" (Dinh ông Thượng). In 1916, former Emperor Thành Thái and his son Duy Tân were exiled to Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean. Later, Bạch Dinh was used again as a summer retreat for the Governors-General of Indochina. In 1934, Bạch Dinh was ceded to Emperor Bảo Đại and Empress Nam Phương as a summer retreat. Therefore, this mansion is also known as Bảo Đại Palace in Vũng Tàu. With its prime location, Bạch Dinh offers panoramic views of Bãi Trước beach and the sea, allowing visitors to feel the vibrant atmosphere of Vũng Tàu city. Bạch Dinh is a popular tourist attraction and its beauty has been preserved and enhanced to this day.
