The system is very well designed and has proven itself over the past two decades (and perhaps more). Simple yet reliable, it's now in its fifth generation on Volvos, and is constantly being modernized and improved. And every time the rear axle stops engaging, most mechanics jump to the conclusion that the problem is the clutch, and most likely a problem with the pump or the module (since these are the most popular answers from experts). But today, an XC90 arrived at our dealership that doesn't fit these symptoms. No, of course the first symptom, or more precisely, the inoperative rear drive, was naturally present. We scanned the fault codes, and none were registered by the DEM module; everything is OK! So why isn't the rear drive working? The problem wasn't with the clutch, as it later turned out, but with the transmission of torque to the driveshaft. The driveshaft didn't rotate while the car was moving, although it should be rigidly connected to the gearbox via an angular gear and a coupling sleeve.
