How to Paint a Valve Cover
COMMENT, LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE. In this Video I show you how to rejuvenate or restore your old valve cover for your classic car engine. This particular valve cover was from a Holden 202 straight 6 engine which was very popular as a workhorse engine in Australia in many Holden vehicles. This was from my grandfather and sat in my garage for many years and now have decided to restore it look much better. The purpose of my videos is to show what can be done using simple tools that can be bought easily and cheaply from your local hardware store or online. RESTORATION PROCESS: I first start by removing the oil cap and placing that out of the way and then apply degreaser to remove all the built-up grease on the exterior and use a wire brush to remove it. I then move on to a wire wheel on a drill but that doesn’t work too well on the baked-on paint. Paint stripper makes short work of removing the paint. I then go back to the wire wheel on the drill and remove all remaining paint on the valve cover and bring it back to bare metal to reveal the surface rust and slight pitting. I use a 240-grit sandpaper which is quite rough to remove the surface rust and also the pitting but the pitting was quite substantial. The valve cover was smoothed out and I then mask of the oil vents on the top and proceed to give it a coat of high build primer. High build primer fills in small imperfections such as light scratches to give it a smoother surface. After that the valve cover receives a coat of red paint out of aerosol can and two coats of clear coat to give it a shine. After that, the oil cap is then cleaned up by using a wire wheel and Dremel and then given a coat of etch primer and gloss black paint. The oil cap is installed on the valve cover and it is complete. Disclosure: I am not sponsored by any of the tools that I use in this video, however I do recommend them.
