Tales from The Ticket Queue - Jim Price - Software You Can Love Vancouver 2023

Official website: https://softwareyoucan.love Vancouver Conference Website: https://softwareyoucanlove.ca Abstract: Sometimes the software that we love doesn't love us back. This talk will look back at an issue that arose last year in production at our VFX studio that had costly ramifications. Our journey will start with the clues that something was wrong, then proceed to follow the various paths that lead to the eventual cause of the problem. During our journey we'll touch on various Linux tools like cgroups and strace as well as how data is structured and file pages. We'll conclude with how we explained the problem to artists in a visually understandable way.
