Paradoxically, it was within the complex and all-powerful French court of Louis XIV and Louis XV that the viola da gamba found the ideal setting in which to let its delicate and expressive voice be heard. Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray were its undisputed protagonists. Simplistically described as an angel and a demon, respectively, both worked at the court of Versailles for decades, making their instrument one of their hallmarks.
