What German Generals Actually Said When They Thought No One Was Listening
Trent Park looked nothing like a prison. It was a Georgian manor on 413 acres of parkland north of London, with tennis courts, a golf course, and rooms furnished with antiques. German generals captured in North Africa, Italy, and France were brought here and treated according to their rank. They were not told about the microphones. Hidden in the walls, the ceilings, and the gardens, the microphones recorded everything. Every private conversation. Every unguarded confession. Every thing these men said to each other when they believed no one outside the room could hear. The transcripts were classified immediately. They sat in the British National Archives for more than fifty years. When historians finally read them, what they found inside destroyed the story these generals had spent their postwar lives carefully constructing. This is what they actually said.
