Robert Ryan – WWII B-17 Navigator & Prisoner of War

Robert Edward Ryan (1922–2025) was a B-17 navigator with the 351st Bomb Group during World War II. After his aircraft was shot down over Germany in 1944, he spent nearly a year as a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft III and later Stalag VII-A (Moosburg). In this interview, recorded on September 15, 2025, Robert reflects on combat, captivity, the Long March across Germany during the brutal winter of 1945, liberation, and the journey home. Rather than focusing only on battles, he shares the personal experiences that shaped the rest of his life. Robert passed away on November 3, 2025, just weeks after this interview. His voice, memories, and reflections remain an enduring record of one generation's sacrifice.
