Its lyrics were written in 1941 by Masaru Yamaoka, an elementary school teacher, while the melody was composed by Toshimichi Takatsuka. The song served as the official anthem of the Imperial Rule Assistance Association (Taisei Yokusankai), a fascist organization that merged Japan's political parties into a single national movement under the military government of Prime Minister Hideki Tojo.
