NORWOOD JUNCTION - 4TH APRIL 2026 - 1ST VISIT Opened in 1839 as Jolly-sailor, Norwood Junction has a storied history as a pivotal hub in South London’s railway evolution. Originally serving the London and Croydon Railway, it was renamed in 1846 and became a testing ground for the innovative but short-lived atmospheric railway system, which used air pressure rather than locomotives to move carriages. Over the decades, the station underwent significant reconstructions to accommodate the growing suburban sprawl and the shift to the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. Today, it remains a vital link for the Overground and National Rail, famously situated just a stone’s throw from Selhurst Park, the home of Crystal Palace FC. Norwood Junction features a complex layout of six active platforms (numbered 1 to 6) connected by a pedestrian subway, though notably only Platform 1 offers step-free access from the main entrance. The station is a busy interchange served by three major operators: London Overground (the Windrush line) providing frequent links to Highbury & Islington and West Croydon; Southern, which runs services to London Bridge, London Victoria, and south toward Caterham and Epsom; and Thameslink, offering fast connections to Bedford, Luton Airport, and Three Bridges. This mix of suburban "stoppers" and regional fast trains makes it a strategic bottleneck and a vital artery for commuters navigating the corridor between Central London and the South Coast. I think that Norwood Junction is a good place to trainspot. This is because the station’s layout offers a clear, wide-angle view of the tracks, allowing you to see trains approaching from a distance as they run along the busy lines. You get a good mix of traffic with London Overground, Thameslink, and Southern services. Overall, it is a cool spot to see plenty of trains. Fun Fact: Norwood Junction is home to the world’s first reinforced concrete pedestrian subway, which opened in 1912. While most railway tunnels at the time were built using brick or expensive cast iron, this one was a massive engineering breakthrough using a "new" method of concrete segments. It was designed so specifically that it could be built just a few feet below the tracks without ever having to stop the trains running above. Overall, it set the standard for modern underground construction that we still use today. Filmed on an iPhone 17 Pro.
