What happened to Gears of War esports? Gears of War is a tactical third-person shooter video game developed by The Coalition and published by Microsoft. Launching with critical acclaim in 2006 for the Xbox 360, Gears of War sold millions of copies and became a house of hold in gaming breaking several world records. While the franchise has never been one that immediately comes to mind when thinking of FPS esports titles, Gears of War was able to foster a dedicated community with a passion for competition. With the support from the developer, an official esports league would launch for several seasons. Sadly, in the first quarter of 2022, The Coalition announced the end of their esports league: “This marks the culmination of Gears Esports competition across multiple titles with thousands of players competing in hundreds of events across the world. While the global pandemic cut short our plans for live events, we’re proud that through the support of our community and partners, we’ve been able to successfully continue the program throughout that time.” The last season of competitive Gears of War concluded in June 2022 at the Summer Major championship.
