Messages to date from light lamb finishing studies in Teagasc Athenry

Recent research in Teagasc Athenry into store lamb production has looked at the option of finishing entire male and castrated Scottish black face lambs to comparatively lighter carcass weights of between 12-16kg with a minimum carcass specification of 02. Currently markets for these lambs are somewhat limited and requires prior agreement with a factory or producer group for producing lambs for this system however Teagasc research has shown that there is potential to finish these type of lambs to lightweights economically which does offer an outlet to hill sheep farmers to finish their own lambs on farm early in the year if store lamb prices are comparatively low. In this short clip, Frank Campion talks us through the recent research taking place at Teagasc Athenry.
