Stephen Oliver - Bilbo's Last Song (from the BBC Radio adaptation of "The Lord of the Rings")
I've always loved all of Stephen Oliver's music for the classic 1981 BBC Radio dramatisation of JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. This kind of English pastoral music is in my blood, ever will be. This song, and the images, depict the departure from the Grey Havens to The West of a number of central characters in the LOTR: Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf, Elrond, Galadriel, Celeborn. Samwise, Merry and Pippin bid their sad goodbyes to them. Alas, the soundtrack is only available on previously-owned vinyl LP (unless someone could kindly point me to a CD version which has NOT merely been taken from a vinyl copy, as with the BBC re-issue of 2002. Doubtless, they either destroyed or "lost" the master tapes). From Wikipedia: " [Inter alia] Stephen Oliver composed the score for the thirteen-hour radio dramatization of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1981. The work combined a main theme with many sub-themes, all composed within the English pastoral tradition". I don't monetise my Channel, but many people, including myself, hold this BBC adaptation in the highest esteem, so if you are interested in buying all 13 hours of it, here's a link to the boxed set of 13 CD's at Amazon UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Books/Fell... Artwork: at opening, by the Brothers Hildebrandt: http://www.brothershildebrandt.com/to... Subsequent images I am researching. Text: Day is ended, dim my eyes, but journey long before me lies. Farewell, friends! I hear the call. The ship's beside the stony wall. Foam is white and waves are grey; beyond the sunset leads my way. Foam is salt, the wind is free; I hear the rising of the Sea. Farewell, friends! The sails are set, the wind is east, the moorings fret. Shadows long before me lie, beneath the ever-bending sky, but islands lie behind the Sun that I shall raise ere all is done; lands there are to west of West, where night is quiet and sleep is rest. Guided by the Lonely Star, beyond the utmost harbour-bar, I'll find the heavens fair and free, and beaches of the Starlit Sea. Ship, my ship! I seek the West, and fields and mountains ever blest. Farewell to Middle-earth at last. I see the Star above my mast! Conductor: Stephen Oliver (c) BBC 1981 Boy treble soloist: Matthew Vine.
