Undeterred, Granny decides to call the police. When Sergeant Dean and Officer Kelly arrive at the mansion, Dean surprises everyone by enjoying Pearl’s yodeling and even joining her in song. Meanwhile, Kelly, still smitten with Elly, wanders over to the pond where she’s stacking firewood under Granny’s still. Unaware of what the still is, Kelly advises Elly against having an open fire in the yard, leaving her amused. Later, when Dean escorts Pearl outside to the squad car, Granny assumes Pearl is in trouble because of her yodeling and feels guilty. Kelly describes the still to Dean, who explains that it’s used for making moonshine. Meanwhile, Granny, overhearing their conversation, misinterprets the situation and concludes that Pearl has turned her in. To protect Granny, Jed, Elly, and Jethro each claim ownership of the still when questioned by the officers. Realizing the family’s good intentions and Granny’s ignorance of the law, Dean and Kelly agree not to take action as long as Granny promises to stop making moonshine, bringing the misunderstanding to a peaceful resolution.
