NYATITI MORA - A lakeside heritage project of NAAM Festival 2025

Communities along Lake Victoria are facing intensifying climate disruptions. Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, fish stock decline, and flooding have destabilized livelihoods of fisherfolk and women in the fish supply chain. Simultaneously, ecological degradation threatens indigenous fig trees (Ficus sycomorus) — the traditional material used to craft the Nyatiti, a sacred Luo instrument central to identity and oral history. Traditionally known as Ng'ou in the luo community the spiritual tree is also a symbol of governance and justice. The large, sprawling canopy of the fig traditionally serves as a designated, neutral meeting place. Clan elders convene beneath it to resolve disputes and mediate conflicts. Including to deliver critical decisions in the community. In the larger African community in several regions it is a profoundly revered symbol of unity, divine connection, ancestral continuity, and justice. It is a living, sacred cornerstone of African cultural, political, and spiritual life, far beyond a plant. Climate breakdown is therefore not only environmental. It is economic, cultural, psychological, and political.
