Can perennial kales and perennial collard survive in below freezing temperatures? This video tells you all about planting and growing perennial collards and perennial kales. The plants from these perennial kale and perennial collard seeds can be decorative or rather plain, but the results are hardy brassica plants, some of which can last for many years. Most kale has been bred to be biennial, but some varieties can grow for three or more years. Some of my perennial kale grex plants were started many years ago and have lived, and reseeded themselves, for many years. Some varieties of kales and collards, like those in the perennial kale grex, are self-seeding, and can continue in your garden for as long as you like. All kale is safe to eat. Even ornamental kale varieties can be eaten (or red to livestock) but some kales and collards are more tasty than others, and the high amount of roughage or fiber in these healthy greens can take humans some getting used to. You can also eat the flowers from kales and collards. The unopened flower buds (or broccolis) are, in fact, the tastiest part of many kale plants, often being sweeter and more tender than kale leaves. Types of perennial kales and collards include Daubenton kale, Taunton Dean kale, purple tree collards and sea kale, which is one of he hardiest perennial kales (not the same genus as other kales and collards, but it belongs to the same family.)
