Want to immerse yourself in an air-cooled 911? Ren Sports, a British company, is a quintessential restomod builder. Their base vehicles range from the Type 930 3.0SC to 1987-1989 models equipped with the G50 transmission, as well as the Type 964. They offer restorations tailored to each owner's needs, modifying the interior, exterior, engine, and suspension. Founder Paul Cockell began his apprenticeship at a Porsche dealership at the tender age of 16. He then successfully earned his Porsche-certified technician license and pursued his passion for motorsports, a lifelong passion for car enthusiasts. After a career that included the development of the 2.7RS and circuit service, he founded Ren Sports in November 2012. Looking at their website, the staff introduction section even lists the names of apprentices. It appears the company has around 10 employees, creating a truly homey yet expert atmosphere. His son, Keith, has now joined the company after completing his training at an auto manufacturer and in the rally world, and further progress is expected. The Japanese office is Auto Direct, a specialty import car store in Higashi-Azabu, Minato Ward. According to company president Tsunoda-san, "We can even customize the color of the air funnels!" They create a one-of-a-kind air-cooled 911 in the true spirit of a "restomod bespoke build," combining the best of the original with the latest technology. Luckily, the showroom had a Gulf Blue Targa for sale. I was able to take a look right away, and what struck me when I sat in it was how solid the body was, even with the roof open. The nimble-revving flat-six engine's displacement has been increased from 3.2L to 3.4L. Apparently, the high-compression pistons and camshafts have been changed, and a six-throttle system from British company AT Power Motorsports has been attached to it. Incidentally, the suspension is electronically controlled dampers. While Ren Sports generally requires you to bring in a base vehicle, Auto Direct has strong connections with Germany's Early 911S, which has a reputation for having an incredible collection of 911s. This means you won't have any trouble finding a base car. Of course, bespoke left-hand drive cars are possible. While there are basic options, Ren Sports' menu is diverse, ranging from street specs to full-on circuit specs.
