It was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The film tells the convoluted origin story and apotheosis of super-soldier Carol Danvers and her alien alter ego, Vers. The lead role of the resulting superhero, Captain Marvel, is played by Brie Larson. It is the 21st feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the third-to-last film of Phase 3. It is also the first film in the MCU to be built around a woman and the first to be directed by a woman. Captain Marvel takes place in the 1990s, before most of the events within the MCU.
