The Yogyakarta Palace Fortress has finally been restored to its almost complete state. After more than two centuries of bearing witness to the history of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, the revitalization of Baluwerti Fortress has restored the palace area to its original appearance when it was first built during the reign of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I. Baluwerti Fortress is an outer defensive fortification surrounding the Yogyakarta Palace, the Sultan's family residence, and the residences of the Abdi Dalem (courtiers). Built during the early days of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, this fort is one of the masterpieces of traditional defensive architecture in Indonesia. During its construction, Baluwerti Fortress suffered extensive damage during the Geger Sepoy Incident in 1812, when British forces invaded the Yogyakarta Palace. Some of the bastions were destroyed, one of the arches was permanently closed, and the fort's appearance remained intact for over 200 years. Now, through a revitalization program as part of the preservation of the Yogyakarta Philosophical Axis Area as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Yogyakarta Palace Fortress has been almost completely reconnected. The revitalization that took place during the reign of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X was a crucial effort to restore the historical, cultural, and identity of the Yogyakarta Palace.
