Unique Western Cape Campsite by Ancient Redwood Forest 🌲🚴‍♂️🏕️ We journeyed to the breathtaking Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve, tucked away in the Western Cape near Swellendam. Surrounded by forest, mountains, and mystical redwoods, this campsite is one of the most peaceful and unique escapes we’ve experienced. 🛖 The Campsite: We stayed at B9, a beautiful decked site with its own private wash-up basin, electricity, and even lighting. The sunsets from this deck are epic. Every campsite here is thoughtfully designed with a little wooden platform and great views. 🔥 Camping Experience: Load-shedding hit us, but we made it work. The eco-logs don’t light easily — so we recommend bringing blits (firelighters). The gas stove came to the rescue for cooking, and our smoky meal actually turned out delicious. 🚿 Ablutions: The bathrooms are impressively clean and modern — one of the best we’ve seen at any nature reserve. Toilets, urinals, and showers are spotless and include little extras like shelves and hooks. The only surprise? The naturally brown, tannin-rich water from the forest, perfectly safe to use and drink. 🌲 The Redwood Forest: This place is famous for its giant Californian Redwoods, planted over 100 years ago. Some now reach up to 40 metres tall. Walking through this towering, peaceful grove feels like stepping into a fairytale. 🦜 Bird Hides & Forest Trails: We hiked to a hidden canopy bird hide, climbed high above the trees, and discovered a secret path to a stunning waterfall-fed swimming hole deep in the gorge. The walk is steep in parts, but the view — and the swim — is well worth the effort. 🚴 Cycling Trails: Cycling here is amazing. Trails weave through the fynbos and forests, offering incredible scenery and a real sense of escape. Whether walking or cycling, the entire area is well marked with signposts and maps — a rarity in many reserves. 🍺 The Reward: After a forest swim and hike, there’s no better feeling than cracking open a cold beer surrounded by silence, nature, and sunshine. This reserve blends history, adventure, and relaxation in one magical space. Redwood forests, secret pools, towering trees — and barely anyone around.
