When a locomotive experiences an emergency or hard braking event, the massive kinetic energy of the train must be dissipated instantly. If the force of the brake pads completely overcomes the friction between the steel wheel and the steel rail, the wheels lock up and stop rotating while the train continues to slide forward. ​This causes two severe visual and mechanical outcomes: ​Wheels Skid & Flat Spots: The intense friction from being dragged along the hardened steel rail literally grinds down the isolated section of the locked wheel. This ablates the metal, creating a literal flat spot (or wheel flat). Once the train moves again, these flat spots cause a violent, rhythmic hammering sound ("thump-thump-thump") that can crack axles and damage the rail infrastructure. ​Burnt Metal & Sparks: The extreme thermal energy generated at the tiny contact point between the locked wheel and the rail causes temperatures to spike drastically. This intense heat causes the steel to glow white-hot, creating dramatic showers of sparks, smoke, and occasionally melting strands of metal. The extreme heat permanently alters the metallurgical structure of the wheel, making it brittle and highly prone to fracturing later on. ​To fix this damage, the locomotive must be taken out of service so the wheels can be reprofiled on a specialized wheel lathe, grinding the wheel back into a perfect circle—or requiring a complete replacement if the burn and flat spot are too deep.
