Queen Puranjani embraced the king, and he reciprocated by embracing her. They enjoyed each other in this secluded place, exchanging pleasantries. Enchanted by his beautiful wife, King Puranjana completely lost his mind. Passing his time aimlessly, he forgot that with each passing day and night his remaining life was becoming shorter and shorter (Srimad Bhagavatam 4.27.3). COMMENTARY: The word pramada is significant in this verse. While inspiring the husband, his beautiful wife also becomes the cause of his downfall. Pramada means "inspiring" and also "maddening." Generally, a householder doesn't consider the passage of days and nights. In his ignorance, he considers the alternation of days and nights to be a matter of course. This is the law of material nature. He doesn't consider that with each rising of the sun, his lifespan is shortened. With each passing day, his remaining life becomes shorter, but the fool, forgetting the primary duty of man, remains with his wife and enjoys her company in a secluded place. This state of consciousness is called apakṛṣṭa-cetana, contaminated. One should utilize one's consciousness to develop Krishna consciousness. But one who is too attached to his wife and absorbed in family affairs does not take Krishna consciousness seriously. Therefore, such a person degrades, not knowing that not a single moment of life can be regained even for millions of dollars. The greatest loss in life is time not utilized in understanding Krishna. We must utilize every moment of our lives properly, and proper utilization of time means perfecting our devotional service to the Lord. Any activity unrelated to devotional service to the Lord is a waste of time. Śrāma eva hi kevalam. Flawless performance of one's duties alone does not bring any benefit to a person. This is stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam (1.2.8): dharmah svanushthitah pumsam visvaksena-kathasu yah notpadayed yadi ratim srama eva hi kevalam If, after perfectly performing one's prescribed duties, one has not developed Krishna consciousness, then all one's work has been in vain and one has simply wasted one's time.
