If you have heard one piece of Bach in your life without knowing its name, there is a good chance it was this one. But here is something most people who love this music never learn. The Arioso is not really a standalone piece at all. It is the opening of a church cantata, and the cantata has a startling title: "Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe," which means "I stand with one foot in the grave." It is the prayer of a person near death, asking for peace and surrendering to whatever comes next. Bach himself clearly loved the melody. He likely drew it from an earlier, now-lost oboe concerto, and years later he reused it as the slow movement of his Harpsichord Concerto in F minor. The tune kept finding new homes, the way the most beautiful melodies tend to.
