What is colorectal cancer? Colorectal cancer is an umbrella term for various types of cancer, and we differentiate based on the tumor's location using the precise terminology. Tumors in the early sections of the intestine are called colon carcinoma, while those in the lower part of the intestine are called rectal carcinoma. I've already mentioned that colorectal cancer is well on its way to becoming a common disease, and this is due to the high number of new cases. Data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) shows that approximately 60,000 people in Germany are newly diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year, with the risk being slightly higher for men than for women. This makes it the third most common cancer in men and the second most common in women. It's quite remarkable that so many of us know so little about it. What causes colorectal cancer? Although it's a widespread cancer, the triggers are not yet fully understood. Colorectal polyps are benign growths in the lining of the colon and are generally harmless. However, over time, they can develop into cancer cells, significantly increasing the risk of colorectal cancer. Therefore, they are usually removed during a colonoscopy to minimize this risk. Furthermore, the risk of colorectal cancer can be hereditary, as we now know that it can occur more frequently in families. If you have close relatives who were under 50 when they developed the disease, your risk of colorectal cancer may also be elevated. Then regular checkups are worthwhile. In about 10% of all cases, the hereditary cause can even be clearly identified. Some gene mutations significantly increase the risk of colorectal cancer. As a final risk factor, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease can also lead to the formation of a tumor in the colon. Protection against colorectal cancer To prevent it from getting to that point in the first place, let's now look at preventative care. This is particularly important in the case of colorectal cancer because we can directly eliminate many risk factors. We can't change familial inheritance, of course, but diet and how we treat our digestive system significantly influence the risk of colorectal cancer. Those who smoke, regularly consume large amounts of alcohol, and eat a diet high in fat and meat automatically have a higher risk. Regular checkups are recommended in these cases, and many health insurance companies fully cover them from the age of 50. Incidentally, preventative care has led to a rapid decline in the incidence rate in recent decades. What health insurance companies cover depends on age and gender; for example, the higher risk for men is taken into account. ▬ About this channel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ With "Video Visit Dr. Weigl," you've found a current and medically sound channel that explains topics related to pain, medicine, and health in an understandable way, based on facts, guidelines, and studies. ▬ More videos ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Alcohol as a risk factor and its consequences for health and the liver: https://bit.ly/Alkohol_Video Ulcerative colitis and the risk of colon cancer: https://bit.ly/ColitisUlcerosa_Video Straight talk!
