Between forests and ponds lie traces of the area’s military past and memorial sites at the National Monument Camp Vught. It was located near Vught, close to the IJzeren Man lake. Camp Vught was the only concentration camp outside Germany that was directly run by the SS and was in operation for just over two years. From this camp, more than 15,000 Jewish people were deported, almost none of whom survived the war. 🏰𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐈𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚: Fort Isabella was built around 1614 as a defensive structure to protect the city of ’s-Hertogenbosch and was part of the Zuiderwaterlinie (Southern Waterline). The fort had a pentagonal shape with five bastions and served as housing for part of the garrison responsible for defending the city. 🏰𝐕𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬𝐞 𝐋𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧: The Vughtse Lunetten form a series of eight defensive structures around Vught. A lunet is a small fortification that is part of a larger defensive line. The lunets were built between 1844 and 1848 as outposts of Fort Isabella. Of the original eight, four have been almost completely preserved, one has disappeared entirely, and three have been partially affected by residential development. 🏊𝐈𝐉𝐳𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐧: The IJzeren Man is a 52-hectare recreational lake surrounded by a wooded landscape. Its name refers to the dredger once used to excavate sand in the area. After the excavation ended, the sand pit gradually filled with groundwater, spring water, and rainwater. The lake has an average depth of about one and a half meters and is known for its clear and clean water.
