Mask making w/ Drew Michael

This video, shot in April 2016, shows the entire process of mask creation. The mask was made by Alaska Native artist Drew Michael in his studio in Anchorage in roughly 12 hours. We tried to squeeze these 12 hours of non-stop work into a 16-minute video without loosing any important detail of the making process. From A to Z: from choosing a piece of wood to preparing the final artwork to be shipped to France for an art exhibit. In this video, Drew gives his commentary on the mask making process and addresses important questions, such as: what does it mean to be a contemporary native artist, why is it important to be able to tell your own story and be open to share your culture. This research was conducted with the generous support from the Fulbright Foreign Student Program.
