We began our journey through this extraordinary country by visiting the picturesque city of Chichicastenango, north of Lake Atitlán, 145 kilometers from the capital. Upon arrival, we were immediately captivated by the fantastic courtyard of the Hotel Santo Tomás. Afterward, we explored its enormous and traditional market, one of the largest and most beautiful in Central America. The stalls, which lined many streets, offered all kinds of products for both tourists and the city's residents. The vibrant colors of most of the goods on display gave the whole scene a lively appearance—a true explosion of color. In the Church of Santo Tomás, Mayan and Christian religions coexist. The constant smoke and the diverse ceremonies create a unique atmosphere. In the Church of Calvary, it's common to see Mayan women lighting candles on the floor and praying. The cemetery's colorfulness and considerable size are impressive. At Cerro de Pascual Abaj, which means "stone of sacrifice," we participated in a striking Mayan ceremony of gratitude and protection. The return trip to the city center, standing in the back of a small truck and speeding through the narrow, steep, and crowded streets, was a surprising and incredibly fun experience that we will always be grateful to our guide, Tomás. Afterward, we traveled to our hotel in Panajachel on the shores of Lake Atitlán.
