SEMC Testing and Rope Grab Safety #NATE ClimberConnection Video
NATE: The Communications Infrastructure Contractors Association (NATE) announces the release of the latest episode in its popular #ClimberConnection video series, spotlighting groundbreaking SEMC (Safety Equipment Manufacturers Committee) testing focused on rope grabs and two-person pickoff rescue scenarios. Filmed at the state-of-the-art Smart Lab in Dayton, Ohio, this new video offers viewers an exclusive look at how NATE and SEMC are advancing safety standards through rigorous real-world testing. The informative video investigates the performance and limitations of automated trailing rope grabs used in fall arrest systems. In collaboration with Jeremy Buckles, SEMC Chairman and Director, Safety – International, SBA Communications, the team conducted over 40 controlled drop tests across multiple rescue scenarios, including single-user, two-person, and wet-rope conditions. “It’s always been SEMC’s goal to test real-world scenarios,” said Jeremy Buckles. “Through this study, we are identifying where misuse can occur and how weather, weight, and compatibility impact rope grab performance. Most importantly, we are educating climbers to always follow manufacturer recommendations and use properly rated systems.” The testing, which included careful inspection, data collection, and analysis by a multi-disciplinary team, revealed key insights into how environmental conditions and equipment pairing affect the safety of fall arrest systems. The findings reinforce the importance of manufacturer guidance and industry education to prevent accidents in the field. The #ClimberConnection Volume 9 campaign is designed to supply education on timely topics directly to the industry’s workforce. For more information on NATE, visit www.natehome.com.
