(FRITS #73) Batik Air Economy Class Flight Experience: ID7150 Singapore SIN to Jakarta CGK

SEATS FEATURED Business: Geven Comoda seats Economy: Recaro CL3510 seats A flight that was enjoyable for me, but also left me with a question as to what was behind Batik's mind with regards to the execution of their correct idea here. After a long nap that I had in a nearby hotel, I went back to the Expo MRT Station and took the usual East West Line Changi Branch service back to the airport. Then, after exiting via the Terminal 2 exit, I transferred to the shuttle bus to Terminal 4, since months after I bought my ticket, the whole Lion Air Group moved from Terminal 3 to Terminal 4, a decision I initially frowned upon, but later I understood due to Terminal 4 being more LCC-intensive. We (my family member and I) initially checked in online and ended up being the first and third person to check in, respectively; however, since the business class was full, the usual free upgrade to Business Class did not apply to me. However, I was still able to secure one of the front-row seats in row 7. Check-in at Singapore, including bag drop, was pretty much straightforward, with efficient and friendly ground staff. Immigration was also straightforward and only required me to stand for a facial recognition scan, and the security check was even more straightforward, helped by the friendly security staff members in Singapore. After a brief moment of relaxation, my aircraft, an ex-Etihad Airbus A320, came to the stand, and not too long after, boarding commenced. Welcomed by a friendly cabin crew member in front of the door, my expectation felt fulfilled when I saw the original Etihad business class seats, still with IFE controls, were still there. However, when I reached my seat, 7A, that impression was turned into horror when I saw the economy seats had been replaced from the original CL3510s that included an IFE screen on each seat, to another CL3510 without IFE. While the placement of the literature pocket and the medium cushioning saved the seat from being totally uncomfortable, the legroom still felt tight at around 30 inches, resulting in me having a bit of trouble storing my bag under my seat, when I didn't encounter such an issue on both my ANA and Delta flights. Departure procedures and takeoff were both prompt, and we left less than 10 minutes behind schedule. We were then served a choice of chocolate and cheese bread alongside a cup of water, which tasted just like the usual divine bread I used to have as a child. The aircraft, having their IFEs completely disabled, had no form of in-flight entertainment whatsoever, not even their usual Tripper Wi-Fi. Some of the IFEs that were left have cracked under abuse, and the cabin condition was not the best; the resulting reconfiguration, albeit done in the right spirit and idea, felt butchered. The cabin crews were friendly throughout the flight, and they orchestrated a mini quiz about Bookcabin, Lion Group's homegrown app. We landed earlier than scheduled after a semi-bumpy flight due to the weather, and I left after a short group photo session with the crews. The baggage delivery at Jakarta has significantly improved, and I did not have to wait too long for my bags to arrive after a very efficient immigration process upon arrival. Overall, Batik Air's soft products are without a doubt decent, and they actually had the right idea about modernizing and standardizing their planes; just not in the right direction and case for this plane.
