Building a small woodworking workbench for use with Japanese hand tools using Rockler stands
Like many woodworkers, I was inspired by @TheSamuraiCarpenter's woodworking workbench build, but I wanted to start a little smaller (and with a smaller budget). So I did additional research on what I wanted before starting this project. I've watched every video on YouTube about workbench design, I've read Christopher Schwartz's workbench bible "The Anarchist's Workbench" by @lostartpress, and I've been mulling over many possibilities. In the end - here is the design criteria I decided on: 1. I needed a bench specifically set up for using Japanese hand planes (which you pull instead of push like European or American planes). That meant some of the conventional placement of things needed to be different. 2. I needed to be able to break it down and move it - that meant using some Rockler stands as the base for now. I may build a real timber frame for it later. 3. No vise. I decided I didn't know enough about what I needed yet to commit to a vise design, so I am using some Veritas hold downs for now (which seem to work great so far). I can always add a vise later. 4. I build mostly "small" stuff like end-tables and lamps, so I decided I didn't need an 8ft long bench (mine is 50"). It just needed to be massive enough to plane and saw against without moving on me. 5. I wanted a "split" top so that I could store tools in the middle and also use that slot for clamping work from the middle. This wood is all reclaimed pine (except for the end caps which are African mahogany), and I love all of the old nail holes in the wood from it's previous life. Of course, the whole bench is based around two @rockler Rock-Steady stands with 20" stretchers. I used @Odiesoil to finish the whole bench and I highly recommend it. All of my holdfasts and clamps are by Veritas from @LeeValleyTools If you want to see more of the bench in use and hear more of my design ideas you can check out the companion video here • Overview of my small woodworking workbench...
