If we just think of it in 3 beats, then we miss the essential aspect which gives it its particular flavor, its personality. This compás is like a 3-dimensional rhythmic cycle. Technically, we call this a crossed meter or polymeter. We don't necessarily care about the name, but this is what makes this compás much more interesting than a simple 3 beats compás: the superposition of these 2 layers creates something new, unique, a 3rd dimension that needs 6 beats to fully unfold. The basic palmas pattern is kind of a flat 2-dimension transcription of the 3D, trying to express everything but just with palmas. The guitar however is much better to express the 3D. This multidimensional aspect of rhythm is really important in flamenco. You’ll find it in many palos, as in bulería.
