Serenade (Morgenstandchen) by Franz Schubert & Franz Liszt - piano solo
Here we have one of the most loved and most famous art songs (Lieder) of all time. I follow Franz Liszt’s transcription for solo piano as an Aubade, a morning love song about lovers separating at dawn. Liszt’s 1838 title is Morgenstandchen von Shakespeare because Schubert said this delicious melody suddenly came to him while he was thumbing through Cymbeline. The original key was C Major but here is D minor (mainly). The instructions include rubato which is the way I play it. Enjoy!
