Roda Viva | Eduardo Leite | 20/07/2020

On Roda Viva, journalist Vera Magalhães interviews the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB). At 35 years old, Eduardo Leite is the youngest governor in Brazil and was elected in the second round in 2018, defeating then-governor José Ivo Sartori (MDB). Upon taking office in January 2019, he inherited a Rio Grande do Sul with broken finances. Last year, he managed to get the Legislative Assembly to approve projects altering the state's pension system and froze public spending as a way to address the loss of revenue caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Because of this, the governor faced strikes by public employees and complaints from some sectors, especially the Judiciary. A critic of the federal government, Leite accuses President Jair Bolsonaro of adopting a radical stance by hindering the coordination of measures to combat the pandemic. According to him, Bolsonaro chose confrontation, breaking all bridges with society, which would ensure better opportunities for low-income children. #RodaViva
