Onions, as you probably know well, can be planted and grown in any type of soil. All onions need to grow well is sun and warmth. The more sun you give it, the softer and sweeter the bulbs will taste. I have a winter onion in my garden, which I grew from onion sets. In the second year, when sowing small onion sets, large, juicy bulbs are obtained. What do onions need besides sun, moisture, and heat to form large heads? How to feed onions for large heads? Of course, the size of fruits, including bulbs, depends on the amount of nitrogen that the plant can absorb. And this means that feeding onions on a turnip or on a large head should be nitrogen fertilizers. The best organic fertilizers rich in organics are aqueous solutions prepared from slurry, urea, compost, chicken manure or green mass of nitrogen-rich plants. I hope you have already done the first top dressing with organic nitrogen fertilizers. But let me briefly remind you that the video was more useful. A month and a half after germination - in my climatic zone, and I live in central Ukraine, this is about mid-May, the onions should be fed with liquid top dressing made from organic fertilizers, its recipe is in this video. If it’s difficult for you with organic matter, you can make it easier - apply mineral fertilizers. Usually, a complete mineral fertilizer is used for the first root dressing of onions. The heavier the soil, the higher the fertilizer application rate. Also, in the first feeding, you can feed onion sets on a leaf or on a feather. So the onion quickly builds up green mass and does not linger in growth. Feeding is repeated after 3-4 weeks. As for the so-called green fertilizers and dressings, or walkers, which gardeners use as an alternative to manure, they can also be used for the second feeding of onions so that the heads are large. Wood ash as a source of potassium can be offered to onions two to three weeks before harvest to complete the ripening process of the bulbs. In addition to wood ash, I often use potassium humate as a fertilizer that completes the onion ripening process, making foliar top dressing in the same period - about 2-3 weeks before the start of harvest.
